If I could make a list of the most frightening situations I’ve ever experienced, bathing an infant for the first time would have to hit the top five of the list. Even my dog has never been so afraid of the phrase “bath time”. The realization confused and paralyzed me at the same time. Like most canines, my dog just dislikes water, simple as that. As for me, I’ve always loved water. And yet there I was, trembling with that little, super fragile bundle in my arms that I was supposed to unwrap and somehow make clean from head to those tiny toes. But I somehow got over it (thanks to my calm and composed hubby), without using any aids such as baby washcloth.
Of course, it wasn’t water that I was afraid of. I just dreaded the thought of accidentally hurting my little one. What if we drop him? What if a single drop of water or soap makes its way into his ears or eyes? If I scrub him too softly, will I manage to wash him properly? And is my scrubbing soft enough from his perspective? His crying could indicate a thousand things. Maybe something’s wrong, or maybe he’s just crying, well, because he’s an infant.
Fast forward a couple of weeks, I was starting to feel way more relaxed at bath time. And then, a fellow mom recommended me to try using baby washcloths. Up to the point, I hadn’t even realized that there were special baby washcloths. So, I gave it a shot, and didn’t regret.
Do I Need a Baby Washcloth?
While doing the research for this blog post, I was amazed at how many baby parents don’t use them at all. Just like they don’t use baby towels. Nor do they think they are necessary. They either use regular washcloths, or they don’t use any.
What I found out is that they do a very gentle job of removing contaminants from the baby’s sensitive skin. It may or may not have anything to do with best baby washcloths, but thankfully I’ve never had eczema or skin irritation issues with any of my three kiddos. Of course, there are cons to their use as well. The first and foremost – more items on my baby laundry list. But that’s just how things work with babies.
So, do you need a special baby washcloth? It boils down to your own assessment. I personally adore them. Not just because they feel so cuddly and cute, but also because I have found so many alternative purposes for them. For example, using them instead of baby wipes or burp cloths. Also, one of them performed miracles on my breast pump parts, reaching every single cranny that my fingers failed to reach. Another one has survived to this day, when my kiddos are no longer infants. And it does a great service to me when I’m removing my makeup.
But in spite of the awesome ways of repurposing best baby washcloths, I won’t tell you whether you need to get them or not. Just in case you say “aye”, here are some of the top choices on the market. Mind you, most of them are not expensive. So, money won’t be an issue, even if you are a frugal mom.

This is a great stock-up solution on a budget. You’ll hardly need more than these ten washcloths. In spite of their being very affordable and even cheap, these terry washcloths are pretty well built and made to last. They are smooth enough never to hurt or overscrub your baby’s gentle skin, but you can also use them on a toddler or kid of pretty much any age (or yourself, ahem).
Plus, the cute patterns will add more fun to your bathroom. These cloths have over 2,000 customer reviews on Amazon alone, with 4 out of 5 stars. Don’t worry about them being rather thin. It will work great on all those super sensitive parts such as wrinkles and folds on the skin, or the area behind the ears.
If you’re one of those parents who insist on using organic materials exclusively, this is the right choice for you. They are made of organic terry, and finished with a 100% organic cotton trim. The materials are combed and ring-spun, making them both soft, breathable and durable. What I really like is that they have two different sides. One is smooth, the other has tiny loops, so you can use them for different purposes.
True, they are on the pricier side, but you won’t regret buying them. Even if your little one has the most sensitive skin, these best baby washcloths will take care of it in a gentle way, without causing irritations. The high quality makes them a perfect gift for a new mom.
First of all, these washcloths are made of 100% cotton muslin. So, no worries about the gentleness and softness. They will come to you pre-washed, so you can put them to use straight away. Even after machine wash, they will stay soft like they were on day one. And there’s a loop on each of them, so you can attach them for easy drying.
The best part is that you won’t have to ditch (or repurpose) them once your baby grows out of the infant stage, since they are great for kids of all ages. With 12×12 inches in size, they are significantly larger than most baby washcloths you will find on the market, and that’s why they are my favorite. In spite of the heftier price tag.
These are not made entirely of cotton. They also have 20% polyester. Which, frankly, shouldn’t be a great obstacle to using them all the time. The color is plain white, which has some advantages in certain (burpy) situations. Also, you can toss them in the machine with other white stuff. They will remain perfectly soft and resistant to wear and tear.
You can repurpose them into cloths for removing makeup, or use them on your armpits. With 9×9 inches, they are of average size as far as washcloths go.
If there’s anything better than cotton, it has to be bamboo. Or rather, bamboo rayon. If you aren’t familiar with it, let me explain. It’s a natural fibre extracted from bamboo. When woven in or knitted into fabrics, it serves as a great eco-friendly and antibacterial textile. So, these best baby washcloths are hypoallergenic, and moms who struggle with baby eczema will appreciate it greatly.
They are super soft too, and will get even softer after washing. With 10×10 inches in size, they will serve great in the bathtub and every other place. Apart from 70% bamboo rayon, they also contain 30% cotton for added absorbance.
Another bamboo option, these come in assorted colors. If you are anyway like me, you will appreciate it since it makes it easier to differentiate them according to purpose. They are machine washable, so no worries on that account. The 100% organic bamboo fibers will prove just as soft or even softer than your regular cotton or terry cloths.
They will never get scratchy, even after many washing cycles. Even though they are pretty small, they will still do a great job on washing your baby or cleaning any kind of mess she makes.
